The Merchant and the Tiger
One day a tiger was walking near a well. His feet slipped and he fell into the water. Although he tried very hard, he could not get out.
A merchant came to the well, wishing to get water. The tiger saw him, and said: “Please, help me to get out!”. “How can I help you?” asked the merchant. “Let down your bag, and I will get into it. Then you can pull me up,” answered the tiger.
The merchant let down his bag, the tiger crawled into it, and the merchant pulled him out. Then the tiger wanted to eat him up, instead of thanking the merchant.
“What!” said the merchant “I have saved your life, and now you want to eat me up.” They went to the ox to settle the case. The ox thought to himself, “The man is my enemy. He always makes me carry heavy bags to markets. If the tiger eats him up, I shall be glad.” He therefore said to the tiger, “Eat him up!”
The merchant again said, “No!” So they went to the durian tree, and asked him to settle the case. The durian tree said to himself, “The man is my enemy. He plucks my fruit and eats me up.”
He then said to the tiger, “Eat him up!”
The mouse-deer came by, and heard the story. Turning to the tiger he said, “How did you get into the bag? Please show me!”
The tiger crawled into the bag, and the mouse-deer said to the merchant, “Quick, quick! Tie him up in the bag!”
The merchant lost no time in tying the tiger up in the bag. Then taking a big stick, he beat the tiger.
